ABOUT

LEARN

Lanka Education And Research Network (LEARN) is the National Research and Education Network of Sri Lanka. It is a non-profit, government-owned organization that provides advanced ICT infrastructure and services to support the academic and research community of the country.

  • Established in 1989, LEARN connects all state universities, state and non-state higher education institutions, and several research organisations through a high-speed, secure, and reliable network. LEARN is also a full member of the global research and education networking community, including APAN, TEIN, and GEANT.
  • Since 2009, LEARN has been operating as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act of Sri Lanka. It is governed by a Board of Directors and owned by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and state universities of Sri Lanka.

About the LEARN Meeting

What it is

The annual gathering of Sri Lanka’s research & education community. In 2025 we launch two new Working Groups—GenAI Empowerment and AgriTech—and run a LEARN Services Awareness session.

Working Groups

Hands-on communities driving projects, training, and real outcomes for 2025–26.

WG 1: AgriTech

IoTRemote SensingAIData Platforms

Purpose: Connect agriculture faculties, research centres, and IT teams to apply digital technologies across education, research, and extension.

Expected Outcomes (2025–26)
  • 2–3 collaborative pilots (e.g., smart farm sensor network; shared agri-data repository)
  • Quarterly knowledge-sharing sessions and a community portal
  • Published roadmap with roles, milestones, and metrics
Who should join:

Academics & researchers in agriculture; IT/IoT specialists; administrators supporting agri projects.

WG 2: GenAI Empowerment

TeachingResearchStudent ServicesOps

Purpose: Build national capacity to use Generative AI responsibly in teaching, research, student services, and NREN operations.

Expected Outcomes (2025–26)
  • 2–3 pilot projects (e.g., student services chatbot; AI-assisted teaching toolkit)
  • 2–3 training programs for faculty, researchers, and IT teams
  • Practical guidelines for safe, ethical GenAI use in higher education

LEARN Services Awareness Session in Partnership with IEEE GRSS

A session for the IEEE-GRSS members and broader LEARN community and prospective members. Topics include:

  • Connectivity & Mobility: eduroam, eduVPN

Opening Ceremony & Social Dinner

The Opening Ceremony welcomes the community, introduces the WGs, and features a keynote address. The Social Dinner (Day 1 evening) brings everyone together to build relationships and kickstart collaborations.
